Saved By Hobbit

"It's either me or a dog in this house", my father forbade me from buying a dog. Little did he know that his threat  actually made it easier for me. I brought home 6 week old little Hobbit the same day. He was one of 6 Lhasa Apsos in the litter, and as soon as our eyes met, it was love at first sight!

He came into my life at a time when I had just been through some personally challenging times and needed more than a distraction. Hobbit was my companion and snuggle buddy who gave me all the unconditional love that I could ask for and more.

Within five minutes of Hobbit's arrival at the house, guess who was on his knees on the floor trying to feed him milk from a baby cup? My father! Why wasn't I surprised? My father is the most sentimental, soppy person I have ever met. He is the reason my family and I say that Kleenex is so successful!

After just a few short years with Hobbit, I moved to Paris and subsequently to the US. Hobbit lived with me in Paris for a brief while, but when I moved to the US in 2002 he stayed in India becoming my father's pride and joy. He remained my father's best friend for the ten years that followed until last November when Hobbit left us for doggie heaven. Sometimes I think my role was to only bring them together. They were practically soul mates!

It was quite serendipitous that last year the movie "Hobbit" released just a couple of weeks after he left us. And this year the second part of the trilogy just came out! My brothers and I were Tolkien fans, and that's where Hobbit gets his name. He came back to us in 3D!

I might get a dog one of these days, but there will only be one Hobbit.

All this makes me realize how important it is for us to be open to the possibilities of receiving unconditional love! I am not saying you need to go out and get a dog, but being open will serve you well. When you are open you will have a more positive outlook towards life, see the serendipity in certain situations, listen more consiocusly and be much more present while speaking, sharing and being with others, especially those that are really important to you in your life.

I hope you find ways to access happiness, peace and unconditional love in your life. However it may look for you, just make sure you leave some space in your life for the simple joys in life. Even if it's just tossing a frisbee to your dog!

Here's to you my sweet Hobbit! I see you chasing butterflies and running freely all over green pastures beyond the rainbow. I miss you and you will always live in my heart.
