Fishing In The Rain

The monsoon season in India, like snow days here in DC, would sometimes result in unexpected but always welcome days off from school. My older brother and I, with no plans for the day, no camp, day care or sitter would sit on the edge of our home's balcony stairs waiting for the water to rise as it flooded the streets and the yard all around the house. It was impossible to leave to go to the local arcade or to play with the neighbors kids even. But we found a way of entertaining ourselves.

First we made paper boats, plenty of them. We set our ships to sail on to the muggy waters that were rising around us. Occasionaly sticks, twigs, leaves and even trash like paper and wrappers would flow out from the neighboring open trash cans. We would grab on to a stick or two and begin fishing in the rain, for trash! It was more like catch and release, of course.

One way or another without complaining we found a way to stay busy and occupied making some wonderful memories and having a great t...

Dr. Laura Hills Interview

My interview with Dr. Laura Hills, president of The Blue Pencil Institute, was one of the most interesting interviews I have had the pleasure of conducting. Dr. Hills has developed a breakthrough system of teaching professionals how to get more out of their careers while feeling accomplished and rewarded as well. This program, "6D Framework for Career Success" is the key that her clients use to unlock the doors to their amazing futures.

Dr. Hills has reached many unique goals in her distinguished 30 year career, but above all considers herself a teacher. In this interview, Dr. Hills and I discuss the specifics of her 6D Framework, it's origins, and how this system has effected the lives of Dr. Hills' clients over the years. I hope you enjoy this interview and take a moment to check out Dr. Hills' website at http://www.bluepencilinstitute.com .

Starting the Week Off on the Right Foot

Ah! Another crisp Monday morning and the girls are back in school. Somehow when the children have a pleasant start to the week and leave for school happy, it just fills my heart with joy. After all it seems like everything we do is for them and when they are happy, it makes us happy. But on the other hand, it's been nine days now since my foot has been hurting after my fall and I am beginning to google "what does a fracture feel like" on my iPhone. I decide that after dropping the girls off at their carpool and my husband off at the airport for a four day trip to Denver, CO (we live near Washington, DC) I might as well get an X-ray, just to be safe!

Within minutes of arriving at the urgent care my right foot was x-rayed and the fracture clear as day in my tarsal or foot bone. Anna, my nice nurse, bandaged the foot and gave me a fifteen second tutorial on how to use my new crutches. Wow! There truly is a first time for everything! It was strongly suggested I go see an Orthopedic righ...

Can I Touch God?

She had just turned five a week ago. I look in my rear view mirror and see my daughter buckled in her booster seat stretching her arm as though trying to reach the front of the car and she says, "Can I touch God?"....!!! My first reaction was "Huh, what did you say?" And she asked again, "Can I touch God?"...My daughters have asked me many interesting questions before, but this one, by far, takes the cake.

So, like any parent who doesn't have the answer to their child's question, I asked a new question, "Where do you think God is my darling?". She said, "God is in our heart". "God is in our hearts? That's right! So all we need to do to touch God and be with God is close our eyes and find him within us, right?" She looked back at me through the rear view mirror with her big black eyes taking a minute to digest what had just been said, and then looked out of her window. The next thing out of her mouth? "When we get home, can I watch the Disney Channel?". And we moved on with our day.

Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

The lyrics to this Paul Simon classic come to mind as I sit on my couch for the fourth straight day nursing a bruised foot. All it took was missing one, just one step...and I am out for the count. The Universe has been whispering in my ear, "Slow down Richa, slow down, pause...!" and here we are. I hear you, thank you, I get it.

This is the first time I have ever hurt myself like this. I took a toss walking from my car to a 7-year old's birthday party. I had barely walked five steps and found myself slipping, falling on my left hand, scraping my left knee and bruising my right foot. In the first few moments I was disoriented by the fall and felt quite certain that it was nothing, that I could get right back up. But then I tried moving my right foot, and no, it wasn't meant to be. I was hurt.

I was in a lot of pain but at the same time laughing because I knew exactly how I had created this accident for myself. The last few months have been quite hectic and I haven't really been able...

Meditation in Big Business

In today's economy, the workplace has become more "dog eat dog" than ever. Competition for promotions and pay raises, vying to land big contracts, not to mention keeping up with industry competition have all lead to the creation of a more stressful work environment than we have ever seen before.

It is said that if you don't take care of yourself you are no good to anyone else. Big businesses have been taking this to heart by incorporating ways for employees to effectively deal with their stress. Now we're not talking about updated prescription plans or cost shares for therapy. The companies we are about to discuss have taken self-care one step further with the institution of on-site meditation rooms and yoga studios.

Take, for example, a woman by the name of Lindsay Van Driel, a business operations manager at Intel. Van Driel used meditation in her own life to manage stress and promote wellness and relaxation after a long day in the office. She was even taking classes to become a c...
